So here is a priestess, she belongs to a world I haven’t named yet, it’s the same world from my past landscape. I took a lot of inspiration from a documentary about the Easter Islands and there’s a lot to this world I’d like to develop further. For now I don’t have much to say, heh.

My first landscape – It took a little while, I completely admit it’s far from perfect and it’s a touch amateur but it’s a first and everyone’s a noob at one point. I’ve always been a big fan of landscape and environmental art, maybe because it’s something far from my character/creature style,  and I’ve always been in complete awe at the simple brush strokes that can define a forest and the natural understanding of light and perspective that I haven’t grasped yet. I’d like to paint another landscape soon, maybe some Daedonas village but I’ll turn back to some character art before then.  So here’s the painting, it’s dedicated to my grandfather – who is a wonderfully talented acrylic/oil painter himself and where I think I got 90% of my natural skill -  every time he saw me drawing skeletons, demons, aliens and cyborgs as a kid he’d always tell me to paint something nice, we’ll it’s been 23 years and I finally did a sunrise (now back to skeletons, demons, aliens and cyborgs haha)

It’s been too long since my last post. So I got my cintiq, and it’s absolutely amazing, the detail work you can do is impressive and for the last few weeks I’ve been trying to practive my landscape painting with it. If you take a look throughout my art site here, you’ll notice the lack of environment/landscape paintings and there’s a good reason for that, I suck at it. But I’m trying and hopefully they’re will be some island shaped fruit to my labour.

So I have here some extended concepts to the conscript militia fellow I painted a little while back.  With the cintiq I tried a new style in the cross hatching sketchwork, I like it looks but it was very time consuming which completely opposite of what a concept artist should be attempting, so I’ll try a quicker style next time with this girl concept I have an idea for.  Till next time, enjoy!

A few more days… the wacom cintiq should be arriving in 5-6 days from now.

I try not to have a day go by without drawing, coming home from working 2D art at ludia can tire me out from time to time  but I still like to get something done in between freelance projects. So here are some fun creature sketches I did this week. As usual I have some Daedonas lore to explore. To help locate : The Crescent Lands

Ulpug –  A semi-aquatic echindna, the Ulpug resides in the shallow rivers and lakes of the Illiak Wetlands. At three to four feet long  this creature is shy and reclusive by nature, rarely assaulting anything larger than itself and will flee at any sign of danger. Generally a social animal the Ulpug families live in burrowed tunnels within mud coasts and will venture into the water to feast on bottom dwelling crustaceans, snails and vegetation. Their powerful jaws and thick blunt teeth crush shells effectively while their large powerful legs propel them at speeds quick enough to stay out of immediate danger. Resorting to aggression in the need of defending their tunnels or that fleet is impossible they will charge at their attacker, striking with their under eye facial barbs inducing a paralyzing sting to deter any would be predators. Overall the Ulpug are well developed survivors, their eyes can tilt fully upwards to view the surface while underwater and have thick leather clad covered backs to defend themselves while foraging, but all these natural attributes mean nothing to a skilled poacher or a sharpened-stick-armed lucky Mou’yyp.  The Ulpug are mercifully hunted for their leather, which is an common element in base armor, while their barb toxin are used for poisons and medicinal purposes, for these reasons the Ulpug’s population’s are relatively low and will continue to dwindle with market economy rising in the Crescent Lands.

Stiltoaki - Almost every still water lake and pond throughout the Crescent Lands the call of the Stiltoaki is heard. Croaking at all hours of the night the amphibian’s will swim and stalk around the waters, catching  insects with it’s long and sticky tongue. The most notable features of the Stiltoaki are it’s long thin almost insectile webbed legs, they are useful for two reasons; to safely traverse muddy bog surfaces and to swim quickly using a squid-like motion with the wide webbed appendages. The Stiltoaki is a very successful species and can be found in many warm wet climate areas, unlike a rare few amphibians who secrete poisons from their skin the Stiltoaki possess no natural toxins or poisons but are still harvested by the People, mostly for their  leg webs which make durable sacks and aquatic clothing materials.

Jura – A quick-footed nocturnal animal, the Jura dwell in the undergrowth in the many coastal jungles of the Crescent Lands. Strictly a herbivore, this creature scurries in the dark of the night digging up tuberous root vegetables and various nuts. The Jura are small creatures that can grow in size up to two feet long, with strong limbs and large eyes to see clearly in the night, these creatures are a fairly rare sight to the surrounding People. Using their strong front teeth and paws the Jura dig deep for their food and for their burrows, usually living in large families of twelve to eighteen. The females care cooperatively for the blind-young until they are ten weeks old to forage by night on their own.

Good news – my graphire wacom broke and out of sheer joy and fury I went and spent 1200$ for a cintiq wacom (which is in the mail now) I’m really excited and can’t wait to start painting with it. I used one at work that the 2D animators have and it’s absolutely amazing, I’m better at gesture and sketching with a pencil than digital and this carries everything good about traditional to photoshop…but it’s 17 times more expensive than a new graphire so as my programmer friend said, my art better be 17 times better also (let’s hope.) So I have here an artwork that’s a bit character design (developing concepts to him soon, this time I promise) and a lot of painting time.  I made sure not to rush him, I figure the more I start to understand structure, light, colour and design I’ll be able to paint faster and more confident. And as usual I have a story, along side many of other creations based in the same world. (Carrion Knights, Living Saint, TechnomancerFaceStalker )

The citizens of CitySpire, the last of purestrain humanity cling to their half ruined edifices of a failed past. Beset on all sides by the seething mass of the unclean, the citizens are forced to sacrifice themselves to keep their borders strong and their bloodlines untainted. In this struggle they send out their sons and daughters without tire to defend the wall, patrol the warrens, and extinguish any insurrection. When a citizen reaches the age of fifteen they are enlisted in the Academy to train and serve for three years. Any not found to have a promising character to better suit the Spire are deployed as the Conscript Militia, or the Third Steppe Guard. Those chosen will defend the city until they can claim four dozen kills in the name of the Spire.

Illustrated below is a Close Quarters Combat Guard, armed with a Guass Bolt Submachine Gun and a Sentinel Steel Sword to better fight in Warren town battles and shield based skirmishes. Armor is a base flak jacket to minimize small arms fire damage, and all Guard are equipped with a standard Re-Breather mask to survive the violent dust storms. The Conscript Militia have a short and deadly career, only the lucky live past the trials of the Academy to a dangerous and overcrowded city life.

Two more swords down, these are redesigns of existing swords and I was tasked to remake the handle design. Since it’s just a remake there was no need for measurements, which is a shame because I find adding the measurements really improve the illustration presentation. I have some more sword work on the way and in between I’ve been enjoying myself with some creature work and photoshop painting of a soldier, I’ll post the creatures soon enough, nothings better then more Daedonas material yay. I also got major kudos from the Cartographers Guild for displaying my work along side two amazing cartographers on the front page and that has me itching to do another map, I’ve been trying to show my map work to Wizards of the Coast but I haven’t been able to find any contact info, I think it’s one of those don’t call us we’ll call you situation. Doing some maps for them would be extra awesome.

Anyway till next time!

Hi everybody, in between sword work (I’m going to post a set of two new ones and a bunch of concepts soon) I redrew a Daedonas race, the Braymun.

When it comes to developing my world I like to really sketch out the character, the homes, and the expressions of the race. Before I go on and on about the history, physical traits and all that good stuff that helps bring it to life. So I’d like to actually draw more about him, today I’m posting a preview, and later on I’ll detail all about this bambi/human race.

The sketch is all pencil but the scanning butchered it a bit; my girlfriend had this scanner, it was old, looked like crap and was slow as hell but nothing I have ever come across did such a good job of picking up all the details and keeping a beautiful contrast, as if all I did was stick the paper to my screen. Now it has died and I’m stuck with this more expensive scanner that doesn’t do anything for me. poo.

Well enjoy!

Braymun

Hi here’s what I’ve been up to, a four sword series of illustrations I did for Darksword Armory, I’ve been working on these for a month along with the concepts for some others and the revised guards/handles for some existing swords they’ve done. I suppose I’ll be posting more swords then anything for a little while as I have a lot more illustrations to do after these four and I’m really considering to have my payment in sword form instead of money.  It would be very cool to have  a massive sword on my wall that I designed from scratch (these four were based off rough sketches from the armory, but some in the future will be from scratch) and when the inevitable post-apocalyptic horde of zombie’s take over I’ll have my weapon of choice.

Also this week I’ve been approached by this french website leGrog to display my biography since I worked on an RPG game, White Wolf’s Exalted. This french website’s aim is to catalogue all RPG games and the people who worked on them. Being Quebecois, my french should be good enough to write my own biography, but it’s not,  my writing is equaled to a kid with a learning disability. So they translated what I wrote and hopefully it turned out half intelligent –> bio

So there it is. My cousin Dan did a pretty fine job, he changed and improved a few things here and there and my uncle is really happy with it.

A freelance update, I’m still working on the sword illustrations and I’ll be dumping a huge load of them here when I’m finished atleast one series. It’s been fun hard work and I can’t wait to see the swords actually forged…I’m still thinking about getting a sword instead of money, I’m pretty sure weapon payment is much more awesome than cheques.

Tattoofinal

Illustrating tattoos are a tricky thing, especially for people you’re going to see more then once in the future.

I usually don’t design tattoos, I once did one for my sister and have been asked by others to do the same but overall I don’t like doing it. Maybe it’s the fact that a mistake stays forever. The reason I don’t have any myself  is that I get tired of my work quickly and if it was on me I’d be bored and would want to improve it within four days.

But this is a demon and demon drawing = fun. So I did it, I’m proud of it and I hope the tattoo artist cousin of mine does a good job.  I’ll be sure to post a photo of it on my uncle’s arm in June when I see him. Anyway here it is. Also, it’s based off a tattoo photo my uncle sent me so the position and idea is a redrawn version of that original.

Anyone looking for a tattoo —  don’t use this one, it’s exclusive and remember tattoos can always be forcibly removed ;)
